Don't lose your revenue from 0870 numbers!
From 1st August 2009 the structure of charging for 0870 numbers has changed.
This is the official link at ofcom that explains it:
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2006/04/nr_20060419 but essentially
it means that the price that can be charged for an 0870 call is being reduced
so that any revenue that companies were able to earn from the incoming calls
ends as of that date. That means no income at all from your 0870 number!
Don't be caught out! There are still alternatives which will provide your
company with the service you need AND maintain or even increase the revenue
you used to earn.
0844 numbers, for example, can replace your existing 0870 numbers and
depending on the exact situation still allow that revenue stream.
Why has this been changed?
The price of 0870 numbers did not come down over the years which meant that many customers viewed them as premium rate calls. In response to complaints, OFCOM have decided to reduce call costs to 0870 numbers thus removing the opportunity for the company using the numbers to make revenue from the calls.
Here are your options which Bruin can help you with:
Option 1 – Keep your existing 0870 numbers
You can choose to keep your existing 0870 numbers. From August 1 2009 you as the company that uses the numbers will be charged a pence per minute rate to receive calls/faxes. Each month the company that provides you with the numbers will bill you for the first time for all your all the calls you have received.
Option 2 - Change your numbers to 0844
These numbers can still provide you with a revenue stream, albeit at lower level. These numbers cost 4.25ppm to call (excluding VAT), about half the current cost of calling 0870 but with all the benefits. This is a popular choice for both customer satisfaction and revenue.
Option 3 - Change your numbers to 0871
This is a good option for some companies but as 0871 numbers are now classed as premium rate numbers from 1 August 2009 you will have to put a price warning in all literature and on the call before the customer gets through. In addition you have to tell them how long they will be waiting to speak to someone. This option could, therefore, deter sales calls in particular.
Option 4 - Change your numbers to 0845
Your callers will only pay local rate charges. Calls are charged at 3.5p per minute (excluding VAT) to the caller.
Option 5 - Change your numbers to 0800
Simply put, FREE Phone numbers mean that you pay for your customers’ calls to you! The rate is typically around 3.5p per minute but varies according to your call volume. This is the most expensive to you but powerful for PR and customer satisfaction.
